Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time (2020)

How much would you give for one of them?

Jesus said to the Twelve: “Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.Mt 10:26-33

Discreet testimony of faith

Motto: “Everyone who acknowledges me before others.” – Is it PC, politically correct, to be in the Jesus party? But then, who knows whether Jesus is left or right wing? Or is He, which is even more unacceptable, neither one nor the other? Yet, today even the proverbial sparrows have the right to be opinion leaders. Thanks to social media everybody can say anything…  Well, possibly not everything. However, we must keep in mind our sparrow nature. For example, a reference to Jesus did not fit into the constitution of the European Parliament. The Greek constitution on the other hand is making a solemn reference. The Bavarians took the crucifixes off the walls. There are many variations now. But the citizen can take a stand also. Say, like Cecilia Müller with the cross in her neck. Many people think that this is not progressive but rather backward. Like our national coat of arms with its cross – which is bent, admittedly.

Is it fear that makes people do what they do? But if nothing is hidden then the shameful denial of one’s identity is a bad strategy in two ways: at the end everything will be revealed anyhow, and we have disgraced ourselves. Finally, we are not going to be authentic, not even with ourselves. So, let’s not be distressed that the social media counts even the little hair we have. Anyhow, even the record taking is being recorded. What is more, the souls of those who kill the soul are accounted for also. And this is not a threat but a relief.
